〈서편제〉의 한과 한민족의 정서 = Hahn and the Korean sentiment in the movie and novel Seopyeonje

국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국인은 어려서부터 “한민족의 고유한 정서는 한이다.”고 배워 왔다. 소설『서편제』와 영화「서편제」도 이러한 인식을 바탕에 깔고 있다. 이 논문은 '한민족'의 정서를 '한'으로 단순화시켜 정형화하고, 때로는 이를 한민족의 정체성(identity)과 동일시하는 결론이 어떻게 귀납되었는가를 소설『서편제』와 영화「서편제」를 중심으로 살펴보았다.
한의 정서 상태는 한 마디로 패배주의이다. '한'은 고통스러운 현실에 그냥 좌절하여 패배의식·허무감을 느끼다가, 현실에서 모든 희망을 버려 버리고 체념하는 삶의 꼴을 말할 뿐이다. '한'에 담긴 유일한 의지는 희망을 버려 버리는 일이다. 이러한 '한'을 한민족의 '고유한 정서'라 한다면, 한민족에게 허무감·패배의식·좌절감을 주고 만다. 한민족의 정체성이 사람다운 보편성을 부정하는 기반 위에 설 수는 없다. 동기야 어찌되었든 딸의 눈을 멀게 한 아비의 행위는 사람다운 정상을 저버린 용서받을 수 없는 범죄이다. '한'을 심기 위하여 딸의 눈을 멀게 하는 행위는, 한민족의 고유한 정서가 '한'이어야 한다는 강박관념이 낳은 폭력이었다. 이것은 예술지상주의가 낳은 폭력이기도 하다.
대립하는 사회관계(민중과 지배자, 식민지민족과 제국주의의 관계)에서 원망·증오가 체념을 넘어 승화한다면, 이것은 바로 현실과 화해하는 행위를 말한다. 이는 현실의 모순을 왜곡하고, 나아가서는 은폐시키는 역기능을 초래하고 만다. 상대를 용서하고 상대와 타협한 끝에 상대에 동화되어 버리고 만다. 식민지 상황과 같은, 적대하는 사회관계에서 '한'은 피지배자가 현실에 타협하고 동화하는 정서이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Most Koreans have learned to understand the notion thathahnis the traditional and inherent sentiment of the Koreans, on which the movie and novel Seopyenje are also based. Focusing on the movie and novel, this study investigated the ways that induce the conclusion that inherent Korean sentiment is simplified and formalized ashahn,and it is even identified with Korean national identity.
The sentimental statement of hahn, in brief, is no more than defeatism.Hahnis just the circumstances of life that discourages people and makes them feel defeated in the harsh realities and subsequently forces them to abandon all hope, such abandonment is the only their own will included inhahn. It led the Koreans to lapse into defeatism, nihilism, and frustration to regardhahnas theinherent sentimentof Koreans.
The identity of Koreans could not ground on negation of humane universality. The behavior of father in the movie and novel, making his daughter blind to infuse hahn into her, is an unforgivable crime against humanity, whatever motives are. This criminal behavior is violence derived from an obsession with the notion that the inherent sentiment of Koreans should behahn,and violence also derived from the art-for-art principle.
When a hatred and resentment immanent in the opposite social relations, such as the messes and a ruler, colonials and imperialist, are sublimated over the abandonment, it means to compromise with the realities and leads to a dysfucntion distorting and concealing contradiction of realities; forgive adversaries, compromise with them, and after all, assimilate into them. In the antagonistic social relations, such as colonial circumstances,hahnis the sentiment of subject people compromising with and assimilating into the realities.
