This paper aims to analyze the word 'ieodo' which is famous in jeju island, specially in folk song. Clarifying the meaning of 'ieodo' will be contributed to show how ocean culture has been spread their territory to agriculture culture.
All the expression 'yeo, iyeo, ieo, iyeon, ieossa, ieosana, ieodo, ieodo ssana, ieodo sana'is concerned to 'ieodo'. leodo was originated from 'ieo' that is a small rock. And 'ssada' came from tiding. The 'ieo' is appearing after the tiding and woman divers' works there for their lives.
The sound of 'yeo' is [j?], it change to [j?] in 'ieodo', or 'ieossa'. The 'yeo' sounds changed from gliding double vowel [j?] to two vowels [i?] and was fixed to it.
The words 'yeo' and 'ieo' are originated from woman divers' folk song, but these expressions also used farmers' working folk songs, like shovel working, grinding and milling. At last it became refraining without its original meaning.
