The objective of the present study is to examine the pattern of association between Kwon Pil (1569-1612) and Heo Gyun (1569-1618) and its historical meanings. The two persons have drawn people`s attention as critics and poets representing the mid Chosun Dynasty. Their similar position as outsiders induced them to have free and individual consciousness and to share the thematic dimension with each other to some degree. Through the two persons and people who associated with them, we can identify the pattern of outside beings engendered through various paths different from the past. In addition, through literary association, they played the role of a meaningful critic to each other. We can see that they pinpointed the merits of each other`s poems and formalized them in the context of the history of poetry, and showed continuous interest in each other`s works through creation and criticism. Another characteristic to be mentioned is that they were involved in the publication of anthologies and the writing of forewords for each other with some understanding of the literary tradition of each other`s family. On the other hand, with regard to the influence and acceptance of literary trends in the late Ming Dynasty, which is one of keywords in understanding the history of literature in those days, we can find a difference between the two. The difference in accepting literary trends from the Ming Dynasty can be an important clue for explaining phenomena in the literary circle in those days. That is, the literary circle of Chosun in the late 16th century and the early 17th century did not accept widely the writings of the earlier seven masters and later seven masters of the Ming Dynasty, or accepted them selectively. This needs to be explained further through close examination of their works during this period, and making topographical maps according to the grouping of literati.
