Much of the earthenware in the form of Sinseollo had been discovered from the Proto-Three Kingdoms period (BC1000~AD 300) until the Silla Dynasty period(BC57~AD935) of the Three States era.. Curiously, the earthen resembling the Sinseollo has many similarities to the Sinseollo used during the period of the Joseon Dynasty and the dish we are currently using in size, structure and form. At present, the dish in the form of the Sinseolloin our country is being used in China. In the past, Korean culture has been much influenced by China. Accordingly, many people guess that the Sinseollo might have been flowed in our land from China. However, the relic which is the prototype of 'huoguo' which was discovered from the relics in the period of ancient China, differs from that of Korea in form and structure, and the dish was discovered in the period of the Three Kingdoms ( Wi, Chok, Oh), which is about 1,200 years later than the Proto-Three Kingdoms period when the prototype of our Sinseollo was excavated. Therefore, it's wrong to guess that 'huoguo' in China might have flowed in Korea in the past. On the contrary, it might be possible to guess that sinseollo culture might have been spread to China.
As for the form of the Sinseollo in the Joseon Dynasty period, its heel has holes, and the body like an iron pot(caldron)is placed on the heel with a cylinder-shaped tube in the center of the body. People at that time used the Sinseollo after putting something like charcoal in the cylinder-shaped tube. Likewise, even from the earthenware in the form of the Sinseollo is the cylinder-shaped tube discovered. By this, it might be possible to presume that the earthenware like the form of the Sinseollo in ancient times might have been a brazier-type dish like the Sinseollo in the Joseon Dynasty period. The cylinder-shaped tube didn't exist in 'huoguo' discovered in China at that period. Therefore, the 'huoguo' discovered at that time cannot be regarded as the brazier-type dish.
On the basis of this, this study, in an effort to find associations between the characteristic and function of the Sinseollo, analyzed the material quality, size, form, structure, use, and function of the earthenware discovered in antiquities. Particularly, it is presumed that its use and function might be similar to that of the Joseon Dynasty period, considering that its structure is similar to that of he Joseon Dynasty period. The Sinseollo in the Joseon Dynasty period has the body like a tureen, functions as a caldron. In oder for the dish to play a role of a brazier and dish at the same time, a fuel intake was made to receive charcoal and the holes in the dish heel plays a role of a furnance. the earthenware like the form of the Sinseollo in ancient times also had earthenware heel, and a cylinder-shaped tube in its body, and assumed a shape of holes in the earthenware heel. Therefore, it is estimated that the prototype of the Sinseollo might be the earthenware in the form of the Sinseollo discovered from antiquities (Proto-Three Kingdoms period~the era of the Three States). From now, it's necessary to continue the studies on the dishes and food culture and this study hopes that there will be a new evolution of Sinseollo dish in accordance with aesthetics, economic efficiency , and cultural orientation.
