전기문의 장르 관습과 교육적 적용 = Genre Conventions of Biographical Literature

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 작문 교육에 도움을 주기 위해, 전기문의 장르 관습을 밝히고자 함이다. 전기문을 쓸 때 전기문의 장르 관습을 잘 알면 쉽게 쓸 수 있다. 따라서 작문 교육에서 전기문의 장르 관습은 중요한 교육 내용이 된다. 이를 위해 문헌 연구를 통해 ‘전기문’의 개념을 재검토하고, 실제 전기문의 분석을 통해 ‘전기문의 장르 관습’을 도출하였다.
지금까지의 작문 교육에서 전기문을 쓰기 위해 가르쳐 온 ‘전기문의 특성’은 ‘사실성, 허구성, 교훈성’과 ‘인물, 사건, 배경, 비평’으로 요약된다. 이들은 규범적이고 고정적이며 탈맥락적인 특성으로, 작문의 인지적 과정 전반에 영향을 미칠 수 없고, 작문 과정 이전에 고려해야 할 수사적 문제 이상의 역할을 못 한다.
그에 비해 ‘장르 관습’은 작문에 실질적인 도움을 준다. 장르 관습은 특정 장르에 대해 수용자가 기대하는 경험, 그리고 같은 장르 내의 텍스트에서 발견되는 일반적인 특성 내지 경향성이다. 장르가 가진 내적 일관성 즉, 장르 관습은 관객의 기대감을 발생시키며 수용자는 비슷한 유형의 경험을 반복하면서 친숙함을 느끼게 된다. 따라서 전기문의 장르 관습에 따라 전기문을 쓰면 쉽게 쓸 수 있다.
전기문의 ‘텍스트 내적 장르 관습’에는 ‘테마, 제목, 시점, 구성 요소, 서술 순서, 사실성을 높이는 장치, 문학적 형상화, 일화의 독립성, 일화의 무분별한 차용, 문체, 인용’등이 있다. 전기문의 ‘텍스트 외적 장르 관습’에는 ‘사실성 검증, 매체의 다양성, 총서 및 집전의 형식, 대상 인물의 가치, 작가의 약화, 작가의 전공, 문학 외적인 창작 의도 개입, 독자의 고려’등이 있다.
이러한 장르 관습이 실제 교과서에 실린 전기문에도 반영되어 있는지를 알아보았다. 총ㆍ중ㆍ고등학교 교과서의 전기문은 대체로 전형성을 띄고 있으며 고등학교 교과서의 경우 개별 텍스트의 개성이 두드러지는 경향이 있었다. 또 전기문 작문 교육을 받지 않은 학생들에게 전기문을 써 보게 하였더니 여러 가지 문제가 발견되었다. 그런 문제들을 극복하는 데에 전기문의 ‘장르 관습’이 유용하리라고 보고, ‘장르 관습’을 활용한 ‘전기문 작문 교육’의 절차를 도식화하여 제시하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to find genre conventions of biographical literature. If students understand the genre conventions of biographical literature, they can easily write biographies. Therefore, to identify the genre conventions of biographical literature is important in writing education. For doing this, check up the definition of biographical literature, and find the genre conventions of biographical literature.
Until now we taught ‘reality, fictional, morality’ and ‘characters, events, background, comment’ as the properties of biographical literature in biography writing education. These are canonical, fixed, and decontextual. So they can not affect the cognitive processes of writing overall, and they are just rhetorical contexts that considered before processes of writing.
In contrast, ‘genre conventions’ are useful when writing. Genre convention is expected experience of audience about a particular genre, and it is a trend or a common properties of the text within the same genre. Internal consistency with a genre that is, the genre conventions, makes the audience expect to, and audience feel familiar while a repeat of a similar type of experience. Therefore, depending on the genre conventions, students can easily write biographies.
The text interior genre conventions of biographical literature are included ‘theme, title, point of view, constituent, narrative order, installation increasing reality, literary formation, independence of anecdote, indiscreet loan of anecdote, a literary style, quotation’ etc. The text exterior genre conventions of biographical literature are included ‘reality verification, media diversity, formality of series, formality of collection, value of target person, weakening writers, writer's major, text exterior intention in writing, considering readers’ etc.
I examined whether genre conventions of biographical literature are reflected in the published text in the textbooks. The biographical literature text in the textbooks used in Elementary schools, Middle School, and High School is Generally typical. But the text in the High School textbooks represent variations. In addition, I discovered that students are not trained with genre conventions have the several problem with writing biographies. To overcome these difficulties, ‘understanding genre conventions’ are needed.
