노년기 삶의 만족도의 성별 차이 = Gender Differences in the Life Satisfaction of Elderly

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper is an investigation of the major factors affecting on the satisfaction of life of the elderly, especially focusing on the influences of gender. This study analyzed 1,818 elderly people aged more than 65 living in Seoul and Chuncheon areas. Sex, health status, proximity with health related institutions, subjective class identification, daily living expenses, and numbers of telephone call with their children were found to be making significant differences on the life satisfaction of elderly. Existing studies on elderly did not take much consideration on gender as an important factor affecting life satisfaction of elderly. Most of the researches on life satisfaction assumed male elderly are more satisfied with their lives than female elderly. However, this paper challenges existing assumptions based on more representative fieldwork data. Despite their poor economic and life conditions, female elderly are more optimistic and satisfied with their lives, controlling other variables. This result suggests different life expectation and living needs of male and female are playing important role in explaining different levels of life satisfaction. This paper also found an accumulative effect of discrimination on female elderly. Due to their disadvantaged situation, female elderly had to accept their endangered living conditions. Even among female elderly, their life satisfactions are differentiated according to individual education, residence, and available expenditure. This paper suggests a more gender sensitive approaches in designing welfare programs and policies for the elderly embracing different conditions of male and female elderly.
