In our society there are some social problems such as egoistic thinking, value confusion, lack of social solidarity and responsibility, etc.. As a way to solve these problems, I explore the concept of communitarian education. For this purpose I introduce MacIntyre's three concepts suggested in his book, After Virtue, namely 'practices', 'the narrative unity of human life', and 'traditions', and I use them as conceptual schemes for communitarian education. First, I deal with the debates between liberalism and communitarianism, explaining their basic assumptions and considering their compatibility. By 'community' I do not mean totalitarian or conservative one, but rather the community for social participation and reform. I argue for communitariansim on the basis of the ontological assumption that self-identity is partly determined by communities or traditions to which one belongs. That is, I support the concept of 'constitutive self', or 'embedded self' or 'encumbered self'. Secondly, I examine MacIntyre's three concepts respectively, discussing basic characteristics of communitrian education. The concept of 'practices' helps to expand educational content. The concept of 'the unity of human life' helps to shift educational focus from 'what to know' to 'how to live', emphasizing the individual life story. The concept of 'traditions' emphasizes to put educational focus on discovering the roots of oneself, and questing and improving the common goods of traditions. Thirdly, I conceptualize communitrain education and show its educational implications. By using MacIntyre's concepts, I suggest respectively 'education as initiation into practices', 'education as the formation of the narrative unity of human life', and 'education as the quest for traditions'. Then, I try to combine them as one definition of education such as 'education as initiation into practices for the formation of the narrative unity of human life through the quest for traditions'. However, this definition is too long. Thus I proposed to call it in short, 'education as initiation into practices' because the concept of practices implies other aspects too.
