The Moonkwan officers in the Chosun dynasty were Recruited through the Moonkwan examination. So, it is very significant for us to look over the successful candidates in Moonkwa examination (a higher civil service examination) if we want to understand the ruling class in Chosun dynasty. Comparing with the great amount of studies on the political system
concerning the civil serviee examination, we have scarecely had the studies on the social aspects in this period. This paper is to analyze the socal background of the successful examinations with special reference to those in the latter Chosun dynasty.
The paper is based upon the hyposis there were many other factors in the screeming the applicants in the examination. I have supposed that the status of applicants worked as a great. factor in passing the exam. Furthermore, there could be many other non-academic factors in grading the levels of Kap, Ul, and Byong.
On the above hyposis, the paper reached the following conclusion : first,
the analysis of the successful candidate's career in the Moonkwa examinations
show that the number of Saengwon and Jinsa had become decreaced in the latter
period of the Chosun dynasty in contrast to the prevalence of yuhark. And the incumbent officials were of incumbency so that there was no notable changes in their ratio of success. second, in screening the grades of Kap, UI, byong, the qualified status of the applicants, i.e., the saengwon, Jinsa, or the incumbent officials gave more benifits in passing the examination than the unqualified status of Yuhark. Third, advantages in attaining a higher grade in the examination so that applicants of qualified status could more easily in the Moonkwa examination.
