The reform of education is handled seriously at the governmental level throughout the world. Among the problems of education, the problem of the ideal university of education is essential in the critical view, reformational view, and perilous view of education.
The academic discipline and education in university should be considered in terms of the ideal function of university education. And, the professional identity of the graduate school of education should be searched in terms of the same sense. The ideal of university education has developed from the ancient leader education, the tradition of students and professors colleague, the search for the truth and the freedom of academic disciplines, and the service for community.
The university education in the U. S. has its ideal basis on the pragmatism and Japan has it on both the pragmatism and the academic disciplines of Europe. Korea has accepted the ideal of education from both Japan and the U. S. and its university has successfully performed the functions of teaching, research and service for community. The professional indentity of graduate school of education should be depend upon the function of academic disciplines and give weight on the inservice-training, teacher education and pedagogy.
Though college of education and teachers' college have a variety of problems in the curriculem and teaching method, the graduate school of education is similar in its identity with that of the above two sorts of undergraduate colleges. But if it gives extra effort on these matters it can be improved to the essential and ideal model of teacher education. The graduate school of education should take a leading role in the educational field in its study on the professional identity and in its roling of functional as well as pedagogic development, in-service-training and teacher education.
