한국어 상징어의 몽골어 번역 전략 고찰 : 웹툰 ‘별난 남자’ 번역 사례를 중심으로 = A Study on Strategies for Translating Korean Symbolic Words into Mongolian : Focusing on the Translation of the Webtoon ‘A Weird Man’

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 웹툰 『별난 남자』 1~10화에 나타난 한국어 상징어를 몽골어로 번역하는 데 있어 Barnwell(1980)과 Baker(1992)의 번역 전략이 적용 가능한지를 고찰하고, 이를 한국어-몽골어 상징어 번역의 특성에 맞게 재구성하여 분석하였다. 연구 대상은 웹툰 『별난 남자』 1~10화에 나타난 한국어 상징어 129건이며, 분석 결과 한국어 상징어는 등가 번역, 차용 번역, 설명 번역, 대체 번역, 생략의 다섯 가지 방식으로 번역되었고, 두 언어 모두 음운 반복을 기반으로 한 상징어가 발달해 있어 등가 번역의 비중이 가장 높게 나타났다. Barnwell(1980)과 Baker(1992)의 번역 전략은 한국어-몽골어 상징어 번역 양상을 설명하는 데 전반적으로 적용 가능하였으나, Baker(1992)가 제시한 상위어 사용 전략은 분석 자료에서 확인되지 않았다. 이는 분석 대상이 『별난 남자』 1~10화로 한정된 데 따른 결과로 판단된다. 본 연구는 기존 번역 전략 이론의 한국어-몽골어 적용 가능성을 검토하고, 한국어 웹툰의 몽골어 번역 연구와 번역 교육을 위한 기초 자료를 제공하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examined the applicability of the translation strategies proposed by Barnwell (1980) and Baker (1992) to the translation of Korean symbolic words into Mongolian as they appear in Episodes 1–10 of the webtoon ‘A Weird Man’. These strategies were subsequently reconfigured to reflect the specific characteristics of Korean-to-Mongolian symbolic-word translation and applied as the analytical framework. The data consisted of 129 instances of Korean symbolic words identified in Episodes 1–10 of the webtoon. The analysis showed that the Korean symbolic words were rendered using five strategies: translation using an equivalent, borrowing, translation using a descriptive phrase, substitution, and omission. Translation using an equivalent accounted for the largest proportion because both languages have well-developed inventories of symbolic words based on phonological reduplication. This study is significant in that it assessed the applicability of established translation-strategy theories to Korean-to-Mongolian translation and provided foundational material for research on the Mongolian translation of Korean webtoons and for translation education.
