This study analyzes the iconography of Zainichi/Koreans and their spatial positionality in postwar Japan as depicted in three short stories by Mizuki Shigeru: Kokusai Gyangudan(International Gangster Band, 1969), Sabishii Hito(The Lonely Person, 1969), and Mura no Chōsenjin(The Korean in the Village, 1971). Unlike previous studies on Mizuki that primarily focused on the iconography of yōkai manga or anti-war manga grounded in his wartime experiences, this paper pays critical attention to the distinctiveness of his representation of Zainichi/Koreans. What emerges across all three works is a sensory paradox: Zainichi/Koreans are represented as “neighbors” who are physically proximate yet epistemologically impossible to assimilate. The “neighboring man” in Kokusai Gyangudan and the “bespectacled man” in Sabishii Hito are portrayed as polite and diligent figures; however, the moment their identity as Koreans is revealed, they are expelled from their position as “neighbors” through the procedural intervention of the police. Similarly, in Mura no Chōsenjin, the Yamamoto family is driven to annihilation through wartime discrimination perpetrated jointly by the state and civil society. This paper elucidates these modes of exclusion through the framework of grotesque realism—which couples realistic background depictions with exaggerated character déformation—and reveals the continuity of colonialist discourse spanning from wartime to the postwar era through a circular scene arrangement. In this light, Mizuki Shigeru’s manga demonstrates a reflective renewal that visualizes the remnants of colonial violence concealed beneath the narrative of postwar Japanese reconstruction. Simultaneously, it exposes a fundamental limitation inherent to the Japanese subject by failing to grant Zainichi/Korean characters the agency of voice and speech.
