In our study, we examine the influence of mentoring functions provided by beauty-care instructors on the selfconfidence and performance competence of participants in the skin-care category of national skills competitions.
We surveyed 238 competitors who had previously participated in national skills competitions. To verify the relationships between specific functions, the mentoring functions were subdivided into career development function, psychosocial function, and role modeling function. According to our research findings, participants perceived improved professional skills as the most significant motivation to participate in the competition. School or academy instructors were the primarily guides to assist in the preparation for the competition. Among the mentoring functions, the career development function had a positive influence on both the confidence and performance competence of the participants. Furthermore, self-confidence demonstrated a significant partial mediating effect on the relationship between coach mentoring and participant performance. This confirms that mentoring enhances the trust and confidence of participants, which contributes to the improvement of the actual performance. Our results suggest that mentoring successfully guides the competition experiences of the participants. It also provides a crucial foundation for participants to develop into mentors in the future, by transforming themselves into leaders with expertise and trust.
