언어 게임의 의미 생성 메커니즘에 관한 연구 - 애니메이션 <소울>을 중심으로 - = The Research on the Meaning Generation Mechanism of Language Games – Centered on the Animation <Soul> –

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현대 애니메이션은 단순한 시각적 소비를 넘어 복합적인 삶의 경험과 철학적 의미를 탐구하는 방향으로 발전하고 있다. 이러한 작품의 의미를 고정된 본질이나 단일한 해석 체계로 설명하는 기존 접근만으로는 작품 내부에서 의미가 생성·변화·재구성되는 과정을 충분히 설명하기 어렵다. 특히 애니메이션 <소울>(Soul)에 관한 기존 연구는 삶의 목적이나 자아 정체성에 대한 논의에 집중되어 왔으며, 작품 내부에서 의미가 형성되고 변화하는 메커니즘을 체계적으로 분석한 연구는 상대적으로 부족하다.
이에 본 연구는 후기 비트겐슈타인의 언어 게임 이론을 이론적 기반으로 삼아, 맥락, 규칙, 사용의 분석 틀을 적용함으로써 애니메이션 <소울>에서 인생의 의미가 생성되는 과정을 분석하였다. 연구 방법으로는 작품의 주요 서사와 대사를 중심으로 질적 텍스트 분석과 철학적 해석을 고찰하였다.
분석 결과, 작품에 등장하는 ‘태어나기 전 세상’, ‘현실 세계’, ‘길 잃은 영혼의 공간’은 각각 제도적 인정, 현실적 참여, 폐쇄적 순환이라는 의미 생성의 조건을 형성하는 공간으로 기능하였다. 또한 등장인물의 행위는 공간의 전환에 따라 외부의 인정 추구에서 삶의 경험을 통한 참여로, 다시 인생의 의미를 재구성하는 방향으로 변화하였다. 이 과정에서 ‘불꽃’, ‘목표’, ‘인생의 의미’와 같은 핵심 개념은 고정된 의미를 유지하는 것이 아니라 각 공간의 규칙과 맥락에 따라 새로운 의미를 획득하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 작품은 인생의 의미를 특정한 목표의 달성에서 찾기보다 일상적 경험과 삶에 대한 적극적인 참여 속에서 형성되는 것으로 제시하였다.
이러한 결과는 <소울>이 인생의 의미를 단일한 목적에 한정하는 기존의 해석을 확장하며, 공간적 맥락과 행위 규칙, 언어 사용 방식의 변화가 철학적 의미 생성에 핵심적인 역할을 수행함을 보여준다. 나아가 본 연구는 철학적 표현은 주제 차원의 관념적 진술에 머무르는 것이 아니라, 오독(誤讀)을 분별하고 해소하는 데에서 더욱 두드러지게 나타난다. 본 연구는 <소울>에서 인생의 의미가 생성·변화하는 과정에 주목함으로써 언어 게임 이론이 애니메이션 텍스트의 의미 생성 과정을 분석하는 유효한 해석 틀로 활용될 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the contemporary cultural contexts where animations has transformed from simple visual consumption to discussing complex life experiences, the essentialism tendency of explaining the essence of a work based on a fixed essence or a single meaning gradually reveals its limits when dealing with multi-layered image texts, elucidate it is insufficient to fully explain the dynamic evolution of the internal meaning of the work. Soul is exactly the representation under this problematic awareness. The discussions about this animation focused on the themes such as finding life goals and confirming one’s own values and so on, while relatively ignored the dynamic process of generation, misunderstanding, and re-understanding about life meaning in this film.
Therefore, this research is based on the later Wittgenstein’s language-game, introduces the analysis structure of “contexts — rules — uses”, uses the methods of combining close reading with philosophical interpretation, thus exploring the generation mechanism of life meaning in Soul. The research found that “The Great Before”, “Earth” and “the Lost Zone” in the film are not just simple narrative backgrounds. Instead, they respectively constitute three conditions for generating meanings: institutional recognition, practical participation, and closed-loop idling. During the process, the functional positions of core words such as “Spark”, “Purpose”, and “the Meaning of Life” shift.
Their relationship gradually shifts from qualification confirmation and mission presetting to experiential connection and life participation, thus shaking the fixed understanding of “equating the meaning of life with a single purpose”.
In brief, the research shows that Soul doesn’t provide a fixed answer regarding the value of life. Instead, it presents the establishment, solidification and dissolution of the fixed connection of “spark - goal - life meaning” through the contextual changes caused by spatial transformation, the reorganization of rules, orders, and word usages.

In other words, the work does not define the meaning of life as the achievement of a specific goal, but rather presents it as a process shaped through everyday experiences and active engagement with life.
This result indicates that Soul expands upon existing interpretations that confine the meaning of life to a single purpose, and highlights the central role of spatial context, behavioral norms, and shifts in language use in generating philosophical meaning. Furthermore, philosophical expression is not limited to conceptual statements at the thematic level, but also manifests in the analysis and resolution of semantic misunderstandings. By focusing on the process of how meaning in life is generated and transformed in Soul, this study demonstrates that the theory of language games can serve as an effective interpretive framework for analyzing the meaning-making processes in animated texts.
