This study examines how GPT-based chatbots for Business Korean learning differ in their response structures and pedagogical functions according to the specificity of self-regulated learning guidelines. Three chatbots were designed based on a pricing task from Pro Business Korean 4. Chatbot A was a general task-support chatbot without self-regulated learning guidelines; Chatbot B was instructed to support goal setting, self-monitoring, and reflection in a general manner; and Chatbot C was provided with detailed procedures and feedback criteria for task comprehension, strategy selection, self-monitoring, feedback, rewriting, and reflection. The three chatbots were controlled for learner proficiency level, textbook scope, response language, and input conditions.
The dataset consisted of chatbot-generated responses to two tasks: a conceptual understanding task and a self-monitoring and feedback task. The responses were qualitatively analyzed in terms of task comprehension, goal setting, strategy implementation, self-monitoring, feedback specificity, Korean expression support, reflection and transfer, and preservation of learner agency.
The findings showed that all three chatbots generally explained the basic concepts of pricing methods accurately, but differed in the degree to which self-regulated learning support was structured. Chatbot A mainly provided direct explanations and revised answers, while Chatbot B included general self-monitoring prompts that were only loosely connected to task criteria and learner-produced output. In contrast, Chatbot C offered step-by-step support by presenting task stages, judgment criteria, causes of errors, directions for revision, sentence frames, and rewriting prompts, thereby better preserving learners’ reasoning and language production. However, even Chatbot C provided limited support for explicit goal setting, reflection, and transfer.
These findings suggest that the pedagogical quality of generative AI chatbot responses depends not merely on the presence of self-regulated learning guidelines, but on their actionability, task alignment, feedback specificity, and capacity to preserve learner agency.
