최소수익보장금(MG) 제도가 직계약 웹툰 작가의 창작 동기에 미치는 영향 연구 레진코믹스 소속 작가의 심층 인터뷰를 중심으로 = A Study on the Impact of the Minimum Guarantee (MG) System on the Creative Motivation of Directly-Contracted Webtoon Creators Focusing on In-depth Interviews with Webtoon Creators Affiliated with Lezhin Comics

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 웹툰 산업의 최소수익보장금(MG) 제도 계약 구조가 웹툰 작가의 환경 통제력과 연재 의지에 미치는 영향을 분석했다. MG 제도는 플랫폼이 미래 수익을 전제로 일정 금액을 선지급하고 이후 발생한수익에서 이를 회수하는 계약 방식이다. 웹툰 계약 정보의 비공개 관행으로 인해 MG 제도의 실제 작동 방식에관한 연구는 제한적으로 이루어졌으며, 또한, MG 제도는 경제적 측면 중심으로 논의되어 계약 방식이 창작 동기에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구는 상대적으로 부족했다. 본 연구는 레진코믹스와 MG 직계약을 체결하고 오리지널 IP 작품을 연재한 경험이 있는 웹툰 작가 12명을 대상으로 심층 인터뷰를 진행했다. 수집된 자료는 버지니아브라운과 빅토리아 클라크의 주제 분석 방법론을 활용해 분석되었다. 연구 결과, 선·후차감 방식 자체보다는계약을 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 환경 및 선·후차감 계약 방식 선택권 존재가 작가의 환경 통제력을 높이는 요인으로 해석되었다. 또한, 작품 기획과 창작 성향에 따라 작가가 선호하는 계약 방식이 달라지는 경향이 나타났다. 이는 작가가 작품 성향에 따라 계약 방식을 선택할 수 있는 제도적 환경을 마련할 경우, 계약 공정성에 대한 인식이 높아지고 창작 몰입이 촉진될 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 계약 조건에 대한 충분한 설명, 계약서 내선·후차감 용어 공식화, 선·후차감 선택지 보장을 플랫폼과 작가 간 상생을 위한 조건으로 제시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines how the contractual structure of the Minimum Guarantee (MG) system in the Korean webtoon industry influences creators’ perceived control over working conditions and their intention to sustain serialization. The MG system is a contractual arrangement in which platforms provide advance payments based on expected future revenue and subsequently recoup these amounts from the revenue generated by the work. Due to the confidentiality of webtoon contracts, empirical research on the MG system has been limited, with prior discussions focusing mainly on economic outcomes rather than creators’ motivation. This study conducted interviews with twelve webtoon creators who had signed MG contracts with Lezhin Comics and had experience serializing original IP works. The data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis. The findings indicate that, rather than the recoupment structure itself (recoupment-first vs. revenue-sharing-first), factors such as the ease of understanding contract terms and the availability of choice between these structures are associated with higher perceived control. The study suggests that sufficient explanation of contract terms, formalization of recoupment-related terminology, and the provision of choice between these structures are key conditions for fostering a sustainable relationship between platforms and creators.
