This study examines how the sea has been represented in Korean cinema in order to shed light on how the geographical imagination surrounding Korea has been constructed throughout the periods of Japanese colonialism and the Cold War. The study first explores the formation of various discourses on world geography following the opening of Korea’s ports to foreign maritime powers. In particular, Choe Nam-seon’s text Haesang Daehansa(1908) is deserving of attention. In this text, Choe raises the question of why Korea—despite being a peninsular nation surrounded by seas on three sides—failed to failed to establish a meaningful presence as a maritime power. Likewise, he also emphasizes that the youth of the Korean peninsula should make efforts to venture offshore. Unlike land, which is based on fixed boundaries and closely tied to territorial sovereignty, the sea is characterized by constant change and fluid movement. However, in Choe’s discourse, the sea is not understood as an indeterminate flowing movement that transcends the fixed boundaries of territorial sovereignty; rather, it is reduced to a foothold or gateway for advancing toward the West (particularly the United States).
Against this backdrop, this paper examines the films Straits of Joseon(Joseonhaehyeob, 1943), The Rose of Sharon(Mugunghwa, 1948), A Sea Gull(Galmaegi, 1948), Rain Outside the Porthole (Binalineun seonchangga, 1970), So Close Yet Far(Gakkabgodo meon gil, 1978), and Mother’s Face above Those Waves(Jeo pado-wi-e eomma eolgul-i, 1978), analyzing from multiple perspectives the oceanic imagination in Korean cinema and the geopolitical unconscious that operates at its foundation. While the oceanic imagination of Korean cinema cannot be entirely free from the discourse articulated by Choe in the early twentieth century, it does not remain confined within its orbit. For instance, the films of Im Kwon-taek emphasize the role of a third party that moves between two already established camps; this mediating third presence works, albeit in a limited capacity, to decenter the very foundation that sustains these two opposing camps.
