This paper analyzes the ontological significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in Lawrence Lek’s Smart City Saga series based on Gregory Bateson’s “ecology of mind” concept. Unlike other works related to AI, Lek’s focus on the imagination of AI using the form of speculative fiction rather than AI itself. In this way, he poses questions that let viewers contemplate the meaning of life and human subjectivity beyond technology. Accordingly, an understanding of his work demands a theoretical analysis of AI beyond a technical approach. To analyze his works, this paper applies Bateson’s ecology of mind. In order to examine how the concept of mind is structurally constituted, Bateson reconfigures frameworks of thought by dealing with the “difference.” In this process, he deconstructs anthropocentrism and challenges traditional Western dichotomous thinking by interpreting the mind concept as a relational process. Given that his theory has similarities with Eastern philosophical thought, and that Lek also reflects East Asian elements to develop his work, this paper adopts Bateson’s ecology of mind as a theoretical framework to analyze AI in Lek’s works. The findings indicate that AI in Lek’s works functions not only as an extension of humans but also as a discrete yet relational artificial entity.
