This study interprets the exile of King Danjong as a new example ofKorean-style dark tourism and examines the possibility of transforming it intopublic history. Whereas previous studies have focused primarily on modern andcontemporary tragedies such as war, massacre, and disaster, this study broadensthe scope of dark tourism to include dynastic political tragedy by understandingthis incident as a form of dark heritage shaped by the overlapping politics ofdeath, loss, and memory. To this end, it analyzes the spatial characteristics andnarrative resources of the Danjong Exile Route and major sites in Yeongwolthrough the theoretical lenses of dark tourism, cultural memory, sacralization,dissonant heritage. The findings suggest that this Route is both a premoderndark heritage site inscribed with the memory of political violence and aresource with strong potential to develop into public history content that fosterseducation, commemoration, and reflection.
