This study analyzes the modes of visual representation of the giant nature beings that repeatedly appear in Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films through the lens of the Japanese folkloric tradition of Daidarabotchi. Unlike previous studies that examined Miyazaki’s view of nature or mythological characters on a work-by-work basis, this research reconstructs a genealogy of transfor- mations in representational strategy across works by focusing on the single formal category of “giant nature beings.” To this end, three analytical axes are established from the Daidarabotchi tradition: ecological spatiality (terrain creation and terraforming), mythological temporality (otherworldly realms and liminal time), and ontological ambivalence (the simultaneity of life and death). These axes are applied to analyze Ohmu from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Totoro from My Neighbor Totoro, the robot from Castle in the Sky, and Shishigami from Princess Mononoke.
The analysis reveals that Miyazaki’s giant nature beings do not represent a linear development from a primitive archetype toward a completed synthesis, but rather asymmetrical reconfigurations of the core attributes of the Daidarabotchi tradition according to the genre-specific affect and narrative context of each work. Ohmu manifests as a primitive form in which ambivalence remains undifferentiated and operates collectively; Totoro embodies a friendly mode of manifestation in which the quality of threat is repositioned within a child’s perceptual framework; the Laputa Robot is a hybrid form that translates nature-deity functions into a mechanical exterior without directly representing organic vitality. Shishigami in Princess Mononoke is not a simple synthesis of these three types; rather, it is the form that most densely and compactly visualizes within a single body the simultaneity of life and death—the very quality that each of the three types had withheld or suppressed. This study thereby demonstrates that Miyazaki’s giant nature beings constitute a representational genealogy in which the core attributes of the Daidarabotchi tradition are asymmetrically reconfigured from work to work.
