Purpose: This study aimed to verify the multiple mediating effects of failure tolerance in the relationship between grit and athletic burnout among adolescent judo athletes.
Methods: To this end, a survey was conducted with 223 middle and high school judo athletes registered with the Korea Sports & Olympic Committee, using questionnaires measuring grit, athletic burnout, and failure tolerance. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 29.0, AMOS 28.0, and PROCESS Macro v4.3, through descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, regression analysis, and mediation analysis.
Results: The results are as follows. First, failure-related behavior was found to mediate the relationship between interest retention and athletic burnout among adolescent judo athletes. Second, failure-related behavior was also found to mediate the relationship between perseverance of effort and athletic burnout among adolescent judo athletes.
Conclusion: These findings confirm that grit serves as a major psychological variable in preventing athletic burnout in youth athletes. Furthermore, by verifying the indirect effect through failure tolerance, this study empirically demonstrated the specific psychological pathway through which grit affects athletic burnout.
