This study examines whether adolescents’ cooperativeness influences aggression through happiness and investigates the conditional direct and indirect effects of peer relationship quality within this relationship. Data from third-year middle school students in the sixth wave (2023) of the fourth-grade cohort of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 were analyzed using Latent Moderated Structural Equations (LMS). The results are as follows. First, adolescents’ cooperativeness had a positive effect on happiness, and happiness had a negative effect on aggression. Cooperativeness also had a negative indirect effect on aggression through happiness. Second, the conditional direct and indirect effects of cooperativeness, happiness, and aggression were statistically significant. Specifically, the negative direct effect of cooperativeness on aggression became stronger as the level of positive peer relationships increased. By contrast, the indirect effect was significant only at low levels of positive peer relationships, indicating that cooperativeness increased aggression through happiness under such conditions. These findings suggest that the effects of adolescents’ cooperativeness on aggression may operate either as a protective or risk factor depending on peer relationship quality. Overall, the results indicate that positive peer relationships are a prerequisite for adolescents’ cooperativeness to function effectively in reducing aggression.
