The application of wood preservatives to mitigate biological deterioration in wooden cultural heritage requires not only demonstrable biocidal efficacy, but also the preservation of overlying painted layers. This study systematically evaluates the effects of selected preservative agents on both traditional and modern pigments used in Dancheong, the decorative painting of Korean wooden architecture. Six representative pigments were examined: Seokganju and Noerok, which are among the most prevalent in architectural applications; Baekto and Seokcheong, which are characterized by minimal chromatic variation according to established quality standards for natural mineral pigments; and Jusa and Seokhwang, which are known to exhibit pronounced color instability. Experimental procedures involved the treatment of pigment specimens-prepared using both traditional and modern formulations-with two commercially available oil-based preservatives and two water-based preservatives, followed by systematic observation of surface and chromatic alterations. The results indicate that preservative-induced effects were generally limited, with measured color differences remaining below 1 in most cases, except for modern yellow pigments, which exhibited higher variation (2.5~3.7). These findings suggest that pigment degradation is more strongly influenced by environmental conditions and intrinsic material properties than by preservative treatment alone. Accordingly, pigment-specific stability assessments are essential before field application. Collectively, the study provides empirically grounded guidance for the informed selection and application of wood preservatives in the conservation of painted wooden heritage.
