This study investigated the influence of social support and psychological needs on exercise behavior and health promotion among older adults with physical disabilities, with a particular focus on their participation in rehabilitation exercise programs. The results demonstrated that emotional and instrumental support provided by family members and healthcare professionals significantly enhanced the fulfillment of psychological needs, thereby strengthening motivation for exercise participation and fostering more planned and consistent exercise behaviors. Fulfilled psychological needs were further associated with greater exercise-related satisfaction and self-efficacy, which contributed to long-term adherence to rehabilitation exercise. Additionally, exercise behavior positively affected overall health promotion by improving physical function, reducing stress, and increasing daily physical activity. These findings indicate that the exercise behavior of older adults with physical disabilities is shaped by the interplay of perceived social support and psychological need satisfaction, ultimately contributing to broader improvements in health and well-being.
Accordingly, rehabilitation hospital sports centers should implement patient-centered and individualized exercise programs, expand opportunities for choice and autonomy, and cultivate emotionally supportive environments to strengthen self-directed and sustained exercise behaviors in this population.
