This study aims to examine the characteristics of text organization in lower elementary students’ writing by analyzing the aspects of cohesion and coherence in diary texts written by second-grade elementary school students. For this purpose, a total of 16 diary texts written by students in the same class were selected as the data for analysis. The study focused on the use of cohesive devices such as conjunctions, references, and lexical repetition, as well as the patterns of event structure and semantic connections between sentences. The results showed that, in terms of cohesion, conjunctions were used most frequently, followed by lexical repetition and reference expressions. In particular, conjunctions such as “and” and “so” functioned as major devices linking events within the text. In terms of coherence, the experiential narrative structure, which combines event description with emotional expression, appeared most frequently. However, in some texts, semantic connections between sentences were not sufficiently explained, resulting in weakened coherence. This study is meaningful in that it empirically presents the characteristics of cohesion and coherence in lower elementary students’ writing based on actual student texts.
