Purpose: This study examined how self-esteem mediates the relationship between social isolation and self-injurious thoughts and behaviors among at-risk adolescents, and further investigated the moderating effect of parent–child relationships within this pathway.
Method: We analyzed data from 3,242 adolescents aged 12 to 18 who participated in the 2024 Survey on Living Conditions of Users of Support Agencies for At-Risk Youth, and employed the Latent Moderated Structural Equations.
Results: The results indicated a significant mediating effect of self-esteem in the association between social isolation and self-injurious thoughts and behaviors, suggesting that social isolation may heighten adolescents’ vulnerability to self-injury. Second, the conditional direct effect of parent-child relationships was not significant, but the conditional indirect effect was significant. Specifically, more positive parent-child relationships attenuated the indirect effect of social isolation on self-injurious thoughts and behaviors through self-esteem.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that to reduce the negative impact of self-harm among at-risk youth, relational support to minimize social isolation and environmental support and educational interventions to enhance self-esteem are needed, and that protection through parental emotional support and communication within the family is also essential.
