This study aims to examine the diffusion pathways and structural characteristics of illegal reproduction of academic books in the context of digital transformation, and to analyze the response experiences of academic publishers. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten practitioners working in academic publishing houses, and the collected data were analyzed qualitatively. The findings are as follows. First, illegal reproduction has become normalized within the digital learning environment after COVID-19, spreading structurally through PDF sharing practices and anonymous online communities. Second, illegal reproduction has led not only to a decline in sales but also to a weakening of trust within the academic publishing ecosystem and the erosion of the foundation for knowledge production. Third, publishers’ responses have largely remained limited to reporting and settlement-based measures, resulting in repeated experiences of ineffectiveness, while structural strategies such as the transition to e-books and the provision of incentives for legitimate use have been explored. Fourth, the study highlights the need to establish an institutional response system in which universities, government agencies, and digital platforms act as joint responsible stakeholders.
