코로나19 전후의 한국 독서행태 특성에 관한 연구 = A Study on the Characteristics of Reading Behavior in Korea Before and After COVID-19

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 코로나19 전후의 한국 독서행태 특성을 살펴보는 데 있다. 최근 10간의 자료를 분석한 결과, 코로나19를 거치면서 독서행태 특성은 다섯 가지로 나타났다. 첫째 온라인 매체를 기반으로 하는 독서활동이 두드러졌다. 종이책의 독서율 및 독서량은 하락세였지만, 전자책, 오디오북 등은 상승세를 보였다. 둘째, 독자들은 경제/경영서에 관심을 보였다. 특히 전통적 재테크(주식, 부동산 등) 및 새로운 재테크(가상화폐, 메타버스 등) 에 관심을 보였다. 셋째, 독자들은 심리적 위안을 얻기 위해서 책을 읽는 경향을 보였다. 이는 코로나19 상황이 유발하였던 사회적 고립, 정신적 억압 등을 극복하고자 하는 심리적인 욕구를 반영한 선택이었다. 넷째, 독자 중심의 소규모 독서 모임(가족·친구와의 만남)이 주요 독서활동으로 자리 잡았다. 다섯째, 오디오북 수요가 급증했으며, 이는 차세대 주요 독서 매체로 떠올랐다. 본 연구 결과는 독서 활성화 전략 수립의 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the reading behavior that appeared in Korea before and after COVID-19. As a result of data analyses, there were five changes in Korean reading behavior through COVID-19. First, on-line media based reading culture appeared. This shift was visible from the fact that the reading rate and volume of paper books were consistently decreased but the reading rate and volume of e-books and audio books increased. Second, readers' preferences on economics and business related books spiked. Readers focused not only on books related to traditional investment areas like stocks and real estate, but also on crypto-currency and the meta-verse. Third, readers read books for the purpose of psychological comfort more than anything else. This was understood to reflect a desire to overcome the social isolation and mental pressure brought on by COVID-19 situation. Fourth, reading activities were closely connected with reader-centered book-reading groups (meetings with family/friends). This study is meaningful in that it can be used as a basic data to figure out readers’reading activities attitudes.
