This study focuses on supply shocks, particularly international oil price shocks, with the main objective of examining the characteristics of inflation rate responses to international oil price shocks since 2000. In this context, it identifies the existence of two distinct effects: the first-round effect, where inflation responds rapidly and significantly in the short term to international oil price shocks, and the second-round effect, where inflation is stimulated steadily over the long term with a time lag. The empirical results can be summarized as follows. First, following an international oil price shock, the inflation rate based on PPI responds more rapidly and significantly in the short term compared to the inflation rate based on CPI. Second, when considering detailed item-specific price indices, the first-round effect is prominent in the “manufactured goods” category in PPI and the ‘transportation’ category in CPI, while the second-round effect is notable in the “food and accommodation” category of CPI. Third, when the CPI is divided into core price index and other prices index to assess robustness, both show characteristics of second-round and first-round effects, respectively. In the event of an oil price shock, policymakers should focus on actively addressing the second-round effects, which can help establish a long-term inflation path, rather than overreacting to the first-round effects, which are beyond direct control.
