콘텐츠 모더레이션 노동의 구조적 특성과 건강 위험성에 대한 탐색 = A Qualitative Exploration of the Structural Characteristics and Health Risks of Content Moderator

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 한국인 콘텐츠 모더레이터를 대상으로 이들의 노동환경과 노동경험의 특성을 살펴보고, 콘텐츠 모더레이션 과정에서 나타나는 심리적ㆍ신체적 건강 반응과 이에 대한 대처 및 회복 전략을 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 국내외 기업에서 최소 6개월 이상 콘텐츠 모더레이터 노동을 수행한 14명의 연구참여자를 대상으로 반구조화된 심층 인터뷰를 실시하고 Colaizzi의 현상학적 분석방법을 활용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 콘텐츠 모더레이션 노동은 플랫폼 산업의 외주화된 노동구조와 프로젝트 기반 고용 환경 속에서 이루어지고 있었으며, 이러한 노동조건은 지속적인 고용불안과 높은 노동강도를 형성하는 요인으로 작용하고 있었다. 또한, 폭력, 자해, 성적 콘텐츠, 혐오 표현 등 유해 콘텐츠에 대한 반복적 노출은 정서적 소진, 강한 심리적 충격과 스트레스 등 다양한 건강 문제로 이어지고 있었다. 특히 이러한 건강 위험은 조직 차원의 제도적 보호 체계 속에서 충분히 관리되기보다 개인의 감정조절이나 비공식적 지지에 의존하는 경향이 나타났다. 본 연구는 콘텐츠 모더레이션 노동에서 나타나는 건강 위험이 개인적 문제가 아니라 플랫폼 산업의 노동구조 속에서 형성되는 구조적 노동 위험임을 보여주며, 노동자의 건강 보호를 위한 제도적ㆍ정책적 대응의 필요성을 제시한다.

This study examines the working conditions and labor experiences of Korean content moderators, focusing on their psychological and physical health responses and coping strategies. Drawing on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with fourteen content moderators employed by domestic and international companies, this study applies Colaizzi‘s phenomenological approach to analyze worker’s lived experiences of content moderation. The findings show that content moderation work is embedded in an outsourced and project-based employment structure characteristic of platform industries. These labor arrangements generate persistent employment insecurity and high work intensity. Moderators are also routinely exposed to harmful materials―including violent, self-harm, sexual, and hate-related content―which contributes to emotional exhaustion, severe psychological stress and trauma-related responses. Despite these risks, organizational mechanisms for protecting workers’ health remain limited, with moderators largely relying on individual coping strategies and informal peer support. This study suggests that the health problems experienced by content moderators should be understood not simply as individual psychological responses but as occupational health risks produced by the structural organization of platform labor.
