This study aims to identify the unique artistic identity and cultural synthesis of the Three Yan period (Former Yan, Later Yan, and Northern Yan) by conducting a detailed analysis of the iconographic subjects and painting techniques found in tomb murals of the Liaoxi region. To date, four major mural tombs from this era have been identified in the region: the Yuantaizicun Tomb, the Feng Sufu Tomb, the Dapingfangcun Mural Tomb, and the Beimiaocun Tomb No1.
The subject matter of these murals is extensive, ranging from human figures (Portraits of the Tomb Occupant, Maidservants, and Couples) to daily life scenes (Processions, Hunting, and Plowing), mythological elements (Four Deities and Feathered Beings), astronomy, architecture, landscapes, and various decorative patterns. Human figures visualize the social status and etiquette of the deceased through banquet and reception scenes, while daily life scenes depict the power and lifestyle of the aristocracy through dynamic portrayals of carriages, horse riding, and hunting. Mythological elements such as the Four Deities and Feathered Beings reflect a combination of indigenous beliefs and Taoist views of the afterlife, while architectural motifs featuring pavilions and gardens symbolize an idealized residence in the world beyond. Furthermore, landscapes including mountains and rivers, along with various decorative patterns, represent a multicultural synthesis of the aesthetic tastes of the literati and the complex projection of Northern Steppe and Central Plain cultures.
In terms of artistic characteristics, significant developments are observed across composition, modeling, color, and technique. Regarding composition, while the traditional horizontal arrangement serves as a foundation, various methods—such as triangular compositions to emphasize hierarchy and layered or trapezoidal compositions to enhance depth—were tested to secure visual order and three-dimensional perspective. In modeling, the murals inherit the early Wei-Jin style of exaggerating the eyes to highlight the occupant’s authority, while progressing through a three-stage evolutionary process from the concise strokes of the Han-Wei period to the fluid and detailed brushwork characteristic of the Wei-Jin style. The color palette primarily utilizes ink and red, blended with a total of seven pigments—including blue, yellow, and green—to maximize visual contrast and symbolic impact. While line drawing and the flat-color method (pyeongdobeop) were the primary painting techniques, the ‘willow-leaf’ (yuyeop-myo) technique identified in the Dàpíngfángcūn Tomb demonstrates a high level of artistic sophistication by realistically reproducing the texture of clothing through controlled line thickness.
In conclusion, the Three Yan tomb murals inherit the classical traditions of the Han- Wei period while innovatively fusing multi-layered cultural elements that reflect the geographical and cultural specificities of the Liaoxi region. Within the context of Northeast Asian art history, these murals occupy a vital mediatory position, serving as a bridge to the development of Goguryeo murals and Tang Dynasty art.
