In Joseon, banjeon(盤纏) for diplomatic missions to Beijing was a state-administered system of provisions intended to cover the expenses required for long-distance travel. It served as basic funding for the movement and lodging of mission members and as a practical means of responding to contingencies encountered during the journey. From the early Joseon period, a major use of banjeon was the p rovision of ceremonial gifts to individuals encountered along the route and in Beijing. Known as injeong(人情), these gifts were regarded as essential for the smooth conduct of diplomatic business.
Over time, however, goods came to be demanded not only for resolving diplomatic issues but also as a condition for safe passage itself. At key checkpoints, the absence of such provisions could hinder the security and progress of the mission. Consequently, it became customary for participants to prepare additional gift items beyond those officially supplied by the state.
Following the instability of the Ming-Qing transition, both the types and quantities of banjeon became more clearly defined, while the volume of injeong continued to increase. Diplomatic missions relied heavily on Joseon-produced goods-such as tobacco, paper, knives, seafood, fans, and stationery-indicating that in-kind gift items remained vital even within a silver-based economic environment. Since these goods could not be fully provided through central allocations alone, they were procured through byeolgangucheong(別簡求請), w hereby p rovincial authorities shared the burden of supply. Ultimately, these i tems were institutionalized under the name yedan(禮單), forming a standardized and indispensable component of diplomatic expenditure along the mission route and in Beijing.
