This study aims to examine the functions of Nambyulgung during the reign of King Seonjo and the process by which it replaced Taepyeonggwan as the official guest house(Gaekgwan) following the outbreak of the Imjin War.
While most palaces were incinerated and numerous buildings were destroyed during the Imjin War, the Nambyeongung was unique for remaining remarkably well-preserved. Nambyeongung was spared from the flames of war as it served as the quarters for the Japanese general Ukita Hideie(Pyung Suga). Following the recapture of the capital, the palace continued to survive as it became the residence of Ming General Li Rusong.
Following the recapture of the capital, Nambyeongung served a variety of purposes: it functioned as a reception venue, a hybrid space for both the main throne hall and a state guesthouse, a site for the Manggwollye (the ritual of bowing toward the distant royal palace), and a ceremonial space for receiving imperial edicts. In summary, Nambyeongung is characterized as having functioned as both a venue for royal court ceremonies-typically held in the main throne hall-and as a s tate guesthouse. In contrast, it appears that Taepyeonggwan suffered significant damage during the Imjin War, particularly to its daecheong( main hall). This compromised its ability to host the essential rituals and banquets required for Ming envoys. Despite these issues, the facility continued to be utilized for several purposes, including as a reception venue, a guesthouse, a space for receiving imperial edicts, a site for requesting banquets, and a location for the ‘Going-to-meet’ Ritual.
However, Taepyeonggwan was used relatively less frequently than Nambyeongung.
A significant distinction between the two was that Nambyeongung hosted h igh-ranking officials, w hile T aepyeonggw an w as u tilized f or those of relatively lower rank. This situation remained unchanged even after the palaces were reconstructed, leading Nambyeongung to solidify its status as the primary state guesthouse. While Taepyeonggwan continued to be used as a state guesthouse, i ts s tatus was no longer what it once was. It became an established practice for envoys carrying imperial edicts(josoe) and decrees(chikseo) to stay at Nambyeongung, while the rest of the mission was accommodated at Taepyeonggwan.
