The full text of Song of Ariran, written in 1941 in English by the American journalist Nym Wales (Helen Foster Snow) based on the personal story of the Korean communist Kim San (Jang Jirak), was first translated into Korean in 1984 by the translators at Dongnyok Publishers. This study examines the historicity of the translation in the first Korean version of the Song of Ariran, now titled Arirang, published under South Korea's anti-communist military regime. Song of Ariran has been translated in various countries throughout the postwar era, and previous scholarship has examined the historical significance of each translation: for instance, in Japan, the book was widely read during the formation of a critical Korean studies field and in South Korea, when they decided to publish Arirang, its Korean translators and the publisher risked arrest under the anti-communist National Security Act. To the existing scholarship, this study adds a comparative textual analysis of the English original and the first Korean translation. It demonstrates that the first complete Korean translation tends to weaken the communist undertones of the original edition, while establishing a narrative of national history. This finding provides evidence that the translation process reflects the specific historical conditions under which it is conducted. Furthermore, by discovering various ‘mistranslations’ in the Korean edition, this study prepares for the future publication of a revised Korean edition of Arirang.
