Kim San, the protagonist and co-author of Song of Ariran, was an important underground revolutionary whose real name was Chang Jirak and who was officially known within the Chinese Communist Party as “Zhang Ming.” However, after being falsely accused and purged in Yan’an in 1938, references to him became taboo for decades due to the radical leftist political movements of the People’s Republic of China during the Cold War. It was not until 1983 that he was posthumously rehabilitated by the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. In particular, prior to the publication of the first complete Chinese translation of Song of Ariran in Beijing in 1993, a complex process unfolded in which the historical figure “Zhang Ming” and the narrative persona “Kim San,” the protagonist of Song of Ariran, gradually overlapped and were rearticulated. This article first examines how the publication of the Chinese-language edition of Song of Ariran in Hong Kong in 1977 influenced the process of Chang Jirak’s rehabilitation and the reconstruction of a comprehensive understanding of his life. It then analyzes how the boom in Chinese Communist Party local party history research in the 1980s contributed to the rediscovery of Chang Jirak as a historical figure. This discussion proceeds in turn through Beijing, Guangdong, and Hebei regions where he had been actively involved.
In the Beijing region, party history research initially referred only fragmentarily to “Han Guoliu,” who had served as the head of the underground Party organization in Beiping, and it was not until 1992 that this figure was explicitly connected to “Kim San.” In Guangdong, which is geographically adjacent to Hong Kong, researchers had consulted the Hong Kong edition of Song of Ariran from an early stage in their studies of the Guangzhou Uprising, yet they were unable to establish that “Kim San” and Chang Jirak were the same individual. In contrast, party history research in Hebei benefited from extensive testimonies provided by individuals who had been under Chang Jirak’s leadership in the 1930s. As a result, by the mid-1980s, revolutionary “Zhang Ming” was already identified with “Kim San,” although Song of Ariran continued to be used primarily as a research source for understanding Chang Jirak’s life as a whole.
Ultimately, the rediscovery of Chang Jirak in 1980s China should be understood as part of a broader effort to view modern Chinese revolutionary history and Chinese Communist Party history from a pluralistic perspective. By moving beyond a leader-centered narrative and reintegrating regional revolutionary energies, this effort sought to restore the Chinese Communist Party’s diminished legitimacy during periods of radical political movements such as the Cultural Revolution, while simultaneously reinforcing internal pride and cohesion. In this sense, the full reception of Song of Ariran in China required not only the rediscovery of Chang Jirak but also the emergence of Nym Wales as a new mediating figure through whom this revolutionary life could be reinterpreted and integrated into Chinese historical discourse.
