· Research topics: The purpose of this study is to empirically investigate the existence of the Dunning-Kruger Effect(DKE) in the domain of environmental knowledge among the Korean population.
· Research background: Effectively addressing environmental issues requires not only policy implementation and technological advancement but also the active interest and practice of individual citizens. However, a significant gap exists between environmental knowledge and environmental behavior. Analyzing the DKE is crucial for a deeper understanding of this discrepancy.
· Differences from prior research: Research analyzing the DKE is predominantly confined to the field of education, and studies focusing on the relationship between environmental knowledge and environmental behavior primarily explain the discrepancy. Crucially, there are no prior empirical studies that specifically investigate the existence of the DKE in the domain of environmental knowledge.
· Research method: This study employed both the traditional four-quartile analysis and a panel data regression analysis using a two-way fixed-effects model.
· Research results: The results confirm the presence of both underestimation and overestimation biases in the domain of environmental knowledge, thereby validating the existence of the DKE.
· Contribution points and expected effects: This study makes a theoretical contribution by empirically confirming the existence of the DKE even within the field of environmental knowledge. Based on these findings, the study suggests directions for environmental education and policy development.
