This study focuses on exploring Oh Cheon-seok’s translation aspects and characteristics present in the Grimm’s Fairy Tales. The main source text for Oh’s translation appears to have been one of either The Youths’ Library or The Rainbow Series, both English-language editions of the Grimm tales translated by Beatrice Marshall. While Oh translated primarily from English version, he also referred to several Japanese translations, including Nakajima Koto’s the Grimm’s Otokibanashi, as supplementary sources.
By comparing three texts, this study identifies and analyzes the specific ways in which double translation manifests in the work. Oh’s translation exhibits a range of characteristics, including literal interpretation, substitution, and even occasional mistranslation. Thus, from a modern perspective, it cannot be considered a perfectly faithful, word-for-word translation. However, to demand such precision from a translator working nearly a century ago—within a completely different linguistic and cultural context—would itself be anachronistic. Seen in this light, the Grimm’s Fairy Tales represents the fruit of a translator’s sincere and diligent effort to render the source text into Korean as faithfully as possible, without departing significantly from its meaning or content.
