This study explored the existential transformations and the processes of subjectivity formation experienced by Chinese female graduate students studying in Korea. In-depth interviews were conducted with four participants, employing narrative inquiry methods and Beauvoir’s existentialist feminist perspective as the analytical framework. The findings revealed the following: First, participants’ decisions to study abroad were initially shaped primarily by their fathers, reflecting patriarchal family structures and limited agency. Second, academic writing transcended mere language proficiency, serving as an existential practice in becoming scholarly subjects. Third, during the doctoral admission process, participants encountered familial opposition and social norms but gradually expanded their capacity for self-determination. Fourth, through experiences of sexual harassment and bodily objectification, they oscillated between silence and resistance, contributing to the formation of their subjectivity. Fifth, the study abroad experience prompted participants to reconstruct norms related to marriage, career, values, and personal independence, enabling them to orient their lives according to their own pace and meanings rather than external expectations. Overall, these findings demonstrate that, despite the dual otherness associated with being women and international students, study abroad can serve as a site for subjective growth through what Beauvoir conceptualized as “awareness of otherness” and the “practice of transcendence.”
