This study explored how middle-aged men engaged in lifelong learning perceive successful aging and how their learning experiences are connected to successful aging within specific processes and contexts. The research question focused on how middle-aged men participating in lifelong learning understand successful aging.
In-depth interviews were conducted with six middle-aged men involved in lifelong learning programs, learning communities, and learning-based volunteer or talent-sharing activities. The data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The findings indicate that lifelong learning serves as a means of fulfilling intrinsic needs and sustaining vitality and psychological well-being through voluntary participation. Learning experiences contributed to emotional stability, renewed life meaning, and active adaptation after retirement. In addition, relationships formed through learning and experiences of social contribution played an important role in reconstructing participants’ sense of identity and social roles. Successful aging, as perceived by participants, extended beyond economic security or physical health and was understood as a dynamic, process-oriented concept shaped by life meaning, relationships, and contribution. These findings suggest that lifelong learning policies for middle-aged men should move beyond employment-centered approaches and support meaningful life exploration and social engagement.
