This study aimed to explore the manifestation of gender stereotypes on digital platforms through the online experiences of college students and provide an in-depth analysis of their impact on the formation of digital citizenship. In particular, this research illuminates the structural mechanisms through which online gender-based hate operate and discriminate based on gender and seeks educational and policy alternative gital community. A qualitative case study was conducted with ten college students selected through purposive sampling from a liberal arts course at D College in the Seoul metropolitan area. Data were collected through weekly keyword reflection journals, in-class discussion records, semi-structured in-depth interviews, and written surveys; these data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The findings are as follows. First, gender stereotypes on online platforms formed a dual structure of criticism, where the points and methods of attack varied by gender. While ontological degradation, such as objectification and appearance-based attacks, was concentrated among women, men faced devaluation centered on their skills and role performance capabilities. Second, the conformity and bystander behavior of surrounding users toward gender-based hate speech acted as a mechanism for the online normalization of hate culture. Third, such a hostile environment induced high levels of self-censorship among users; it forced identity concealment among women and performance-based obsession on men, ultimately undermining autonomous participation and mutual respect, which are the core values of digital citizenship. Based on these results, this study suggests designing customized digital citizenship curricula that reflect gender-specific nuances, strengthening education to shift bystander roles to those of active mediators, and establishing technical regulations and ethical guidelines at the platform level.
