This paper analyzes 21st-century trends in China’s Silk Road art history research and related exhibitions. It specifically notes the strong correlation between these trends and both modern archaeological findings and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The paper further explores how these national policies and discoveries have shaped the primary flow of contemporary Silk Road scholarship and display.
Research on terrestrial Silk Road art history is primarily divided into two fields: the excavation of Buddhist grottoes and surface temples, and the study of Sogdian artistic culture. While the former has progressed alongside excavations for UNESCO World Heritage nominations, the latter has been largely propelled by the accidental discovery of late 6th- to early 7th-century Sogdian tombs in China. Notably, Sogdian studies are evolving beyond traditional iconographic and stylistic analysis, expanding into a broader interdisciplinary cultural history that integrates historical and religious perspectives The study of Maritime Silk Road art now focuses on Chinese ceramic history, largely due to the rise of underwater archaeology and the Belt and Road Initiative. Continuous excavations of sunken trade ships in China and collaborative projects at global ports have resulted in a massive volume of recovered porcelain. This wealth of new evidence has pushed research into Chinese export ceramics to a peak in the 21st century.
Driven by a wealth of archaeological finds and the Belt and Road policy, China’s Silk Road exhibitions have entered a period of rapid expansion. This era is characterized by the rise of digital museums powered by advanced technology and the birth of entirely new museum concepts. Within these spaces, there is a remarkable transition from object-based exhibitions to narrative-driven displays that focus on the lives and stories of people.
