‘소대지변’과 ‘제물’의 관점에서 바라본 《장자》 치언 = A Study on the Meaning of Zhiyan(卮言) in the Zhuangzi(莊子) from the Perspectives of Xiaodazhibian(小大之辯) and Qiwu(齊物)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 《장자》의 핵심 언어 방식인 ‘치언(卮言)'에 대해 종래의 기물 작동 원리나 음운·문자학적 해석에서 벗어나, 고고학적 실물 고증과 ‘소대지변(小大之辯)' 및 ‘제물(齊物)'의 관점에서 그 본의를 재해석하였다. 전래 문헌과 전국·서한 시대의 출토 유물인 '칠치(漆卮)'를 분석한 결과, ‘치(卮)'는 당시 매우 흔하게 사용되던 소형 술잔(주기)이자 일정한 용량을 나타내는 단위였음을 확인하였다. 이를 바탕으로 본고는 ‘치언'을 술잔처럼 ‘작은 말’로 정의하며, 이는 도(道)의 전체 면모를 담지 못한 채 시비와 변론에 매몰된 제자백가의 단편적인 학설을 상징한다고 논증하였다. 나아가 장자는 이러한 ‘작은 말'들을 무조건 배척하기보다, ‘천예(天倪)’라는 도의 원리로 조화시킴으로써 언어의 한계를 초월하고 무궁한 도의 경지에 도달하는 언어적 방편으로 활용했음을 밝혔다. 결론적으로 치언은 시비 변론으로 가득 찬 당대 언어 상황에 대한 장자의 비판적 인식이자, 이를 ‘제물’의 관점에서 포용하여 자신의 사상을 전개해 나간 독창적인 수사학 장치라 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study reinterprets the original meaning of Zhiyan(卮言), a core linguistic mode in the Zhuangzi(莊子), by moving beyond traditional mechanical or phonological interpretations and focusing on archaeological evidence and the philosophical concepts of Xiaodazhibian(小大之辯, the distinction between the small and the great) and Qiwu(齊物，the equalizing all things). Through an analysis of traditional literature and ‘Lacquer-Zhi(漆卮)’ excavated from the Warring States and Western Han periods, this study confirms that the ‘Zhi（卮）’ was a common small drinking vessel and a unit of measurement. Based on this, Zhiyan is defined as “small words”(minor or trivial speech) akin to a small cup, symbolizing the fragmented theories of various schools of thought that were mired in right-and-wrong disputes without grasping the full aspect of the Dao. Furthermore, this study argues that ZhuangZi did not unconditionally reject these “small words” but instead harmonized them with the principle of Tianni(天倪, the Heavenly millstone), utilizing them as a linguistic expedient to transcend the limits of language and reach the infinite realm of the Dao. In conclusion, Zhiyan represents both Zhuangzi’s critical perspective on the contentious linguistic environment of his time and an original rhetorical device that embraces and transforms those disputes through the lens of “Qiwu(齐物, the equalizing all things)”.
