This paper compares the three jibilbon versions of the Seungmangyeongso (Commentary on the Śrīmālādevīsiṃhanāda Sūtra; 勝鬘經疏), written by Bunhwang Wonhyo, and I examine the limitations of the jibilbon version found in the Complete Works of Korean Buddhism.
The Śrīmālādevīsiṃhanāda Sūtra, which contains the teachings of Tathagatagarbha, was considered an important scripture by all sects, and many scholars wrote commentaries on it. Wonhyo wrote the two-volume Seungmangyeongso, but both volumes are now lost. However, a significant portion of them is cited in the Shōmangyō-shoshōgenki (勝鬘經疏詳玄記) by Gyōnen (凝然), a monk active during Japan’s Kamakura period. Kim Sang-hyeon published a compilation in 1993 by collecting citations, and Fukushi Jinin published a compilation in 2013. A third compilation, which combined and supplemented the two compilations, was included in Volume 15 of the Collected Works of Korean Buddhism in 2022, and a translated and annotated edition was published the same year.
A review of the version published in Collected Works of Korean Buddhism revealed five cases where the inclusion of the text was inconsistent. First, there were cases where Wonhyo’s annotations were confirmed as having been done, but their content was unknown. Second, there were cases where quotations from different works were identical in content. Third, there were cases where direct and indirect quotations were identical. Fourth, there were cases where it was impossible to confirm whether the original text was from Wonhyo’s Seungmangyeongso or another of Wonhyo’s works. Fifth, there were cases where the annotations of other scholars were cited and then those of the Seungmangyeongso were claimed to be identical. It is necessary to refine/reorganize/clarify (choose one) the Collected Works of Korean Buddhism by precisely defining the purpose and standards of the jibilbon compilations.
