This study examined the effectiveness of a compassion meditation program that reconstructs the Western Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) model into a “sensation–recollection–integration” framework tailored to the cognitive and emotional characteristics of older Korean adults. A 12-session group program was conducted with 10 older adults living in the metropolitan area, using a mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were analyzed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis. The results showed that body-based sensory interventions helped establish a sense of physical safety, thereby facilitating self-kindness.
Life-curve–based recollection significantly reduced feelings of isolation (p = .024) and promoted ego integrity through recognizing the universality of suffering. In addition, existential mindfulness significantly decreased depressive symptoms (p = .049) and supported a process of life integration mediated by acceptance of death. These findings suggest that an integrative compassion meditation combining somatic approaches with life-review reinterpretation can serve as a practical intervention model for enhancing ego integrity and preventing depression in later life. This study provides foundational evidence for preventive interventions in geriatric welfare settings.
