미술과 교육과정 ‘심미적 감성’ 개념의 재해석 : 존 듀이의 예술론을 중심으로 = Reexamining the Concept of ‘Aesthetic Sensibility’ in the Art Education Curriculum : Based on John Dewey‘s theory of Art

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 존 듀이의 예술론을 토대로 현행 교육과정 내에 제시된 ‘심미적 감성’ 개념을 재개념화하는 데 있다. 최근 개정 교육과정에서 심미적 감성은 핵심역량으로 강조되고 있으나, 주로 감수성, 공감, 향유와 같은 정서적이고 태도적인 요소 중심으로 제시되어 있다. 이에, 본 연구는 듀이의 『경험으로서 예술』에 나타난 ‘질성적 사고(qualitative thought)’와 ‘하나의 경험(an experience)’ 개념을 중심으로 심미적 감성 개념을 재해석하였다. 연구 방법은 문헌 연구와 현상학적 연구를 기반으로 하였다. 먼저 2022 개정 교육과정을 분석하여 심미적 감성 개념의 교육과정 내의 위치와 의미를 고찰하였고, 다음으로 듀이의 예술론을 중심으로 질성적 사고, 하나의 경험 개념 분석 및 관련 선행연구를 검토하였다. 이어서, 예비 교사들이 듀이의 『경험으로서 예술』을 읽고 작성한 성찰 자료와 토론 내용을 질적으로 분석하여, 해당 이론이 예비 교사 교육 맥락에서 어떻게 이해되고 전유되는지를 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 심미적 감성 개념을 정서적 태도의 영역으로 바라보는 기존 관점을 넘어, 경험 전체를 하나의 의미 있는 경험으로 조직하도록 규제하는 질적 사고의 원리로 재개념화하였다. 재개념화된 심미적 감성 개념은 ‘감각·정서·인지의 통합적 작용을 통해 경험 상황에 내재된 질적 의미를 포착하고, 그 경험을 하나의 통일된 구조로 조직하도록 의미화하는 사고 능력’이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to reconceptualize the notion of “aesthetic sensibility” presented in the current national curriculum through John Dewey’s theory of art. In the recently revised curriculum, aesthetic sensibility is emphasized as a core competency; however, it is largely framed in terms of emotional and attitudinal elements such as sensitivity, empathy, and appreciation. Drawing on Dewey’s Art as Experience, this study reinterprets aesthetic sensibility with a focus on the concepts of qualitative thought and “an experience.” The research employed both literature review and phenomenological inquiry. First, the 2022 revised national curriculum was analyzed to examine the position and meaning of aesthetic sensibility within the curriculum framework. Next, Dewey’s theory of art was explored, centering on qualitative thought and the concept of an experience, along with a review of relevant prior studies. In addition, reflective writings and discussion records produced by pre-service teachers who read Art as Experience were qualitatively analyzed to investigate how Dewey’s ideas are understood and appropriated in teacher education contexts.
Based on these analyses, aesthetic sensibility is reconceptualized beyond a merely emotional or attitudinal domain as a principle of qualitative thought that organizes experience into a unified and meaningful whole. The reconceptualized concept of aesthetic sensibility is defined as the capacity to apprehend the qualitative meaning inherent in a given situation through the integrated operation of sensation, emotion, and cognition, and to structure that experience into a coherent and unified whole.
