Concerns have been raised that social media intensifies user biases through algorithmic recommendation structures and engagement features such as likes and shares. Prior research has largely focused on comparing platforms or examining the informational biases produced by social media and their consequences. However, as digital technologies and social media reshape and remediate traditional journalistic functions, empirical research remains limited on how the journalistic attributes newly manifested on these platforms influence users‘ perceptions and behaviors. Given the increasing proportion of news consumption occurring on social media and the growing number of users who perceive social media as a news medium, there is a need to structurally analyze the journalistic functions that social media performs. Grounded in this perspective, the present study examines four journalistic attributes of social media; immediacy, public sphere, agenda setting, and transparency, and investigates how these attributes shape selective reinforcement behavior, defined as participatory responses to belief-consistent or belief-inconsistent information. The study also tests whether users‘ perception of social media‘s journalistic role mediates these relationships.
Based on content analyses on news articles across major social media platforms, combined with large-scale survey data (N = 993) , a single-mediation model was formulated. Measurement items for each attribute were developed based on conceptual definitions established in journalism and media-effects literature. Additionally, selective reinforcement behavior was divided into positive and negative forms to more precisely assess how each attribute contributes to overall reinforcement tendencies.
The result revealed that all four journalistic attributes exert significant negative indirect effects on selective reinforcement behavior through users‘ perception of social media‘s journalistic role. This indicates that the journalistic functions embedded in social media contribute to reducing selective reinforcement, and that this effect becomes stronger when users perceive these functions as part of social media‘s legitimate journalistic role. Moreover, the attributes of the public sphere and transparency show significant or marginally significant direct effects on selective reinforcement behavior, suggesting that perceptions of discursive openness and procedural transparency can independently suppress biased participatory responses, even without operating through the mediating mechanism.
These findings extend the dominant narrative that social media primarily reinforces user biases. The results provide empirical evidence that social media can function as a multifaceted journalistic environment that shapes user behavior in more complex ways than previously assumed. By identifying perception of journalistic role as a key mediating mechanism, this study underscores that not only structural attributes of platforms but also users‘ cognitive evaluations are critical for understanding participatory behavior. Based on these insights, the study offers academic, practical, and policy implications for platform design, particularly for enhancing procedural transparency and facilitating environments where users can exchange and evaluate diverse perspectives, as well as for public regulatory discussions.
