This paper examines how Heian-period tales narrativize killing (sesshō) across major corpora, arguing that conceptions of killing were not governed by a single ethical norm but reorganized through changing religious expectations. The narratives develop distinct logics of retribution, salvific conversion, divine interruption, and rebirth.
In Nihon Ryōiki, killing is predominantly framed as immediate “visible punishment”: illness, premature death, and hell-like suffering manifest in this world, imprinting the compelling force of the precept against taking life. In Hokke Genki, while killing remains a grave karmic offense, the narrative center shifts from punishment to salvation, repeatedly depicting how Lotus Sutra recitation, repentance, and right-mindedness at the moment of death can enable rebirth without erasing the sin.
In the Jizō Bosatsu Reigenki tradition preserved in Book 17 of Konjaku Monogatari-shū, the emphasis moves further from post hoc judgment to the interruption and redirection of the very process by which killing becomes actualized: Jizō intervenes as a concrete salvific mechanism closely tied to the late-Heian discourse of “certain hell” (jigoku hitsujō).
Finally, late ōjōden literature portrays killing as socially and occupationally structured amid the rise of the warrior class, yet continues to stress that a single decisive choice at the deathbed—or minimal nembutsu practice—can secure rebirth.
