Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in general school administrators’ perceptions of special education and students with disabilities over the past decade.
Method Using data from the Special Education Longitudinal Survey conducted in 2014 and 2024, responses from general school administrators were compared.
Results Administrators’ perceptions about special education and students with disabilities have become more negative over the past 10 years. By school level, elementary school administrators demonstrated increasingly negative perceptions, whereas middle school administrators showed more positive changes in their perceptions of students with disabilities.
Administrators with prior experience in special education generally reported more favorable perceptions than those without such experience.
Conclusion The findings suggest the need for reflection and review regarding the special education awareness improvement activities conducted to date. The study emphasizes the need for more systematic support and sustained efforts to improve administrators’ perceptions in order to ensure the success and advancement of inclusive education, and it offers recommendations for future development.
