This study aims to reexamine the literary value and significance of Nangwongun Yi Gan (李偘, 1640–1699), a royal kinsman (Jongchin) of the 17th century, by closely analyzing the compositional background of his eleven didactic sijo poems—selected from his thirty extant works—and by examining their structure and characteristics. The background of Yi Gan's didactic sijo composition is explored through historical sources such as Yi Ha-jo’s postscript (Balmun) in Cheongguyeongeon, Yi Jae’s epitaph (Myogalmyong), the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty, and the Diaries of the Royal Secretariat. This investigation reveals that Yi Gan’s life emphasized filial piety, the promotion of learning (ganghak), and the strict observance of Confucian rituals. These findings suggest that his poetic motivation stemmed not from a mere conceptual self-awareness but from a profound sense of duty to disseminate Confucian virtues throughout both the royal household and broader society. The eleven didactic sijo, grouped as a cluster in Cheongguyeongeon, can be categorized into three thematic sections: exhortations on moral life and practice, the selection and transmission of the Five Cardinal Relationships (Oryun), and the ethics and responsibilities of the local community (Hyangdang). This structural framework effectively illustrates a progression of moral ideology, where ethical practice begins with self-cultivation (susin), develops through the Oryun, and ultimately extends into the social sphere of local communities. This study is significant in that it addresses the gap in existing scholarship on Yi Gan’s sijo and presents a comprehensive textual analysis of his didactic sijo corpus.
