국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 캐나다 Royal BC Museum(RBCM)의 탈식민화 실천을 비판적으로 검토 하며, 박물관 내부의 언표 구조와 식민 권력의 지속적 재현 메커니즘을 분석한다. 우선, RBCM이 표방하는 탈식민화 담론과 실천이 외형상 변화를 보이지만, 실제 로는 박물관이라는 제도 내부에서 허용된 범위에 제한되어 있다는 점에 주목한다. 또한, 이러한 개혁이 진정한 기억의 재구성으로 이어지는지, 아니면 ‘화해의 형식 화’라는 상징적 제스처로 귀결되는지 검토한다. 분석 결과, RBCM의 탈식민화를 위한 담론이 제도적 위계 지속을 은폐하는 기제로 작동하며, 그 개혁의 실행에는 과거에 대한 사과에도 불구하고 권력의 비대칭성이 유지되는 이중 구조가 존재함 을 밝힌다. 나아가 ‘탈식민화된 박물관’이라는 개념 자체에 내재된 역설을 드러내 어, 단순한 ‘재현의 재구성’을 넘어 ‘권력의 실질적 전환’을 요구하는 진정한 탈식 민화의 필요성을 제기한다.

This study critically examines the decolonization practices at the Royal BC Museum (RBCM) in Canada, analyzing the museum's discursive structures and the persistent mechanisms of colonial power reproduction. First, it highlights that while RBCM's decolonization discourse and practices demonstrate superficial changes, they remain confined within the boundaries permitted by the institutional framework of the museum. Furthermore, it investigates whether these reforms lead to genuine reconstruction of memory or merely result in symbolic gestures of “formalized reconciliation.” The analysis also reveals that RBCM's decolonization discourse functions as a mechanism that conceals the persistence of institutional hierarchies, and that the implementation of these reforms operates within a dual structure where power asymmetry is maintained despite apologies for the past. Moreover, this study exposes the paradox inherent in the very concept of a “decolonized museum” and argues for the necessity of authentic decolonization that demands not merely a “reconstruction of representation” but a “substantive transformation of power.”
