Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is widely used in extreme environments owing to its excellent heat resis tance, low friction coefficient, and outstanding chemical stability. Despite its extensive applications, research on the tribological properties of PTFE under ultraviolet (UV) and ozone exposure is limited. Hence, this study investigates the friction and wear behaviors of PTFE under different UV irradiation conditions. We use a custom-built tribometer equipped with a UV chamber, capable of simultaneously measuring normal and frictional forces, to study the tri bological properties of PTFE under four different environments: Air (without any UV irradiation), UV-A (365 nm), UV-C (254 nm), and Ozone (185+254 nm). The friction coefficient of PTFE exposed to Ozone is approximately three times higher than that of PTFE exposed to Air. Contrarily, the friction coefficients of the samples exposed to UV-A and UV-C conditions are 13-18% lower than that of the sample exposed to Air. Furthermore, the most distinct wear scars appear under the UV-C and Ozone conditions. These findings indicate that surface oxidation, molecular bond dissociation, and softening caused by UV and ozone exposure significantly influence the tribological char acteristics of PTFE. Hence, this study provides fundamental insights for future research on UV-based surface mod ification and design of PTFE components for extreme environmental applications.
